Hawthorn Berry Tincture

This grows as a small tree or large shrub, and bears clusters of white flowers in late spring. Tomatoes turn red in September (here), and are delicious later. By October 31st, they are sweet, maybe past their peak. Each berry contains 3-5 seeds.

The leaves are lobed and toothed, as you can see in my photo above. Many other species of hawthorn have similar leaves. The plant has large thorns with long thorns, about three centimeters long. However, with reasonable care, you can easily remove the fruits, which fall into the branches. It is easier later in the season when most of the leaves fall and no longer cover the thorns.

Also called common hawthorn, this is a native of Europe that has escaped cultivation in North America. It is sometimes referred to as a noxious plant, but I don’t see it very often, and when I do, there aren’t many of it in one area. Perhaps it is strong in other parts of the country, but it does not seem to be particularly strong here. Like the Washington hawthorn, the single-seeded hawthorn grows as a shrub or small tree, and bears clusters of white flowers in late spring. The red oval fruit grows a little later (than the Washington hawthorn) in the fall and has one seed (hence the name). The toothed leaves are sharper than those of the Washington hawthorn, but the thorns are smaller, only about 1/2 inch to an inch long.

Hawthorn is commonly found in the forests here in Massachusetts, but those are examples that don’t produce very well. It is very shady in the forest. To find fruit-laden hawthorn trees, look in sunny areas, such as weeds and grass, near pastures, and along streams. They are often grown as ornamentals, so if your friend has one and doesn’t mind you carrying some fruit, you’ll have an easy culinary experience at your fingertips.
