Black Hawthorn Berries Dogs – Harvesting hawthorn berries is a new one for me this year. They are sweet and mild if you get them at the right time, and in years past I ate them early in the fall. This year, Washington Hawthorn was sweet and mild in late October. But by then, the single-seeded hawthorns have started to rot, so next year I’ll look for them in mid-October.
I want to give some credit to Josh Fecteau’s recent hawthorn post, which inspired me to try hawthorn berries again. As Josh mentioned, there are probably 50 hawthorn species in New England. And, according to George Symonds (from his excellent book Tree Identification: A New Method for the Practical Identification and Recognition of Trees) in all of North America, perhaps a thousand species.

, my favorite guide to learning Tree ID). Fortunately, you don’t have to be able to identify specific species. You just need to know it’s a hawthorn, because all hawthorns have edible berries. However, like apple seeds, hawthorn seeds contain cyanide and should not be eaten. Don’t panic; Just spit out the seeds.

It grows as a small tree or large shrub and bears clusters of white flowers in late spring. Berries turn red in September (here), but sweeten later. By October 31st, they were sweet, and probably a little past the peak. Each berry contains 3-5 seeds.

The leaves are lobed and toothed, as you can see in my picture above. Many other hawthorn species have similar leaves. The plant is armed with long thorns up to about 3 inches. However, with reasonable precautions, you can easily collect the berries, which hang away from the branches. It’s easier after most of the leaves have dropped and the thorns are no longer obscuring.
Also called common hawthorn, it is a European native that escaped cultivation and naturalized in North America. It is sometimes labeled as an invasive plant, but I don’t find it very often, and when I do see it, there isn’t much of it in one area. It’s probably invasive in other parts of the country, but it doesn’t seem particularly invasive here. Like Washington hawthorn, single-seeded hawthorn grows as a shrub or small tree and bears clusters of white flowers in late spring. The oval red berries ripen a little earlier in the fall (than Washington hawthorn) and contain one seed (hence the name). The toothed leaves are more deeply lobed than Washington hawthorn, but the spines are much shorter, only 1/2 inch to an inch in length.
Hawthorns are common in the forest understory here in Massachusetts, but these are scratchy specimens that do not produce well. It is very shady in the forest. To find fruit-laden hawthorns, look in sunny areas such as shrubby fields and bushes, on pasture edges and along streams. They are often planted as ornamentals, so if your friend has one and you don’t mind picking some berries, you have an easy foraging experience at your fingertips.
This is my first experience using hawthorn berries, and I’m using them to make an extract, using the same process you’d use to make vanilla extract. I hope to use hawthorn extract as a flavoring in cooking and baking. I filled a clear canning jar about 3/4 full with berries, covered it with 80 proof vodka and capped the jar. I’m not sure how long it will take to extract enough flavor from the berries, so I’ll check it daily. While it’s not unusual for your pet to scramble in the hedgerows, hang berries and do a bit of foraging, there are a number of healthy treats for them to enjoy while you walk on the wild side.
Hawthorn berries can be eaten by dogs. If they eat too much they may get an upset stomach, but mostly they are safe to eat.
Avoid areas where you know they have been sprayed with chemicals but are otherwise a healthy dog food.
An Identification Guide To Berries
At first glance they look similar and hawthorn leaves give the impression that they are hawthorn berries.
Briony berries don’t have blossom ends (like the bottom bit of an apple core) and are very shiny and reddish.
If you touch them, be sure to wash your hands as soon as possible because they are also poisonous to humans.
Bryony berries will also be a string of plants where hawthorn will be attached to a stalk.

If your dog eats briony, you need to see a vet. The whole plant is poisonous but the roots are the most poisonous.
You may also come across hops that will use hedgerows to get to the light.
It is unlikely that your dog will be able to reach the hops as they climb quite high in the hedges and trees but some of the flowers may fall, so watch out for them.
When foraging with your dog, keep an eye out for nettles (they usually don’t grow in the fall and winter), you might get stung but your dog’s fur should protect them and be fine.
What Hedge Plants Are Safe For Dogs?
The old story, if you are stung by a nettle is not true if you have been stung if you rub it off a dock leaf. Doc is poisonous to dogs.
If you try to rub a dock leaf on the nettle sting site, don’t let your dog lick it off.
They contain oxalates which are highly toxic to dogs and humans (but you probably won’t lick yourself if you get stung).
Cooking the leaves is considered safe for them to eat but I still wouldn’t give it to my dog.
Berries That Birds Love
Black berries are quite safe for your dog to eat. The berries themselves are safe although they may get a few thorns trying to reach them.
Check your dog’s paws after roaming around the hedgerows, to make sure there are no thorns or seeds stuck in their fur, paws or pads.
So walking along the footpath in the field with the hedges you may see some of these berries and flowers, enjoy and be safe, if you can’t identify it correctly, don’t eat it.
