Hawthorn has several different species and many hybrids that grow in the UK, but the most common is monogyna, followed by Midland Hawthorn, laevigata. Both can grow into bushy shrubs or more like monogyna trees, usually more upright.

Berries are high in pectin and are a great addition to jellies and jams to help them set. The berries make a good jelly on their own and just the juice made by hitting the berries in hand and stirring them will go off quickly without heat. If the berries are very sweet, there is no need to use sugar, just add a little sugar to taste. Harvesting Hawthorn is a new fruit for me this year. They taste sweet and light if you get them at the right time, and a few years ago I tasted them in early fall. This year, Washington hawthorn tastes sweet and light in late October. But then hawthorn single seeds start to rot, so next year I will look in mid-October.

Food For Free: How To Make Hawthorn Jelly

It grows in small trees or large shrubs and has white flowers in groups in late spring. The berries turn red in September (here) but sweet later. By October 31st, they are sweet and may have reached a slight peak. Each berry contains 3-5 seeds.

The leaves are hairy and toothed, as you can see in my photo above. Many other hawthorn species have similar leaves. The tree has long thorns that are heavily armed, up to 3 inches. However, with reasonable care, you can easily harvest berries that tend to move away from the branches. It is easier later in the season after many leaves have fallen and the thorns are no longer there.

Also known as the common hawthorn, this is a European native that survived cultivation and nature in North America. Sometimes it is named as an invasive plant, but I do not see it often and when I see it it is not abundant in one area. It may be aggressive in other parts of the country, but it does not seem to be particularly aggressive here. Like the Washington hawthorn, the single-seeded hawthorn grows in clumps or small trees and has white flowers in clusters in late spring. Oval red berries ripen slightly earlier (than Washington hawthorn) in autumn and have a single seed (hence the name). The toothed leaves have deeper hairs than Washington hawthorn, but the thorns are only about 1/2 inch to 1 inch smaller.

Hawthorns are common in the woods hidden here in Massachusetts, but they are not fruitful specimens. It is too shady in the forest. To find fruit trees, look for sunny places such as meadows and dense forests at the edge of meadows and along streams. They are often planted as ornaments, so if your friend has a fruit and does not care about picking berries, then you have an easy experience feeding at your fingertips.

Some studies have shown that hawthorn extract can improve blood cholesterol levels due to its flavonoid and pectin content. Pectin is a type of fiber that is involved in the metabolism of cholesterol.

Unbalanced blood cholesterol levels – especially high triglycerides and low (good) HDL cholesterol – play a role in atherosclerosis or plaque formation in your arteries.
