They are sweet and mild if you get them at just the right time, and in past years I tasted them too early in the fall. This year Washington hawthorn was sweet and mild in late October. But by that time, one-seeded hawthorn began to rot, so next year I will look for it in mid-October.

, my favorite guide to learning tree ID). Fortunately, you don’t have to identify specific species. You just need to know it’s a hawthorn because all hawthorns have edible berries. SLIGHTLY, like apple seeds, hawthorn seeds contain cyanide, and should not be eaten. Don’t panic; just spit out the seeds.
Hawthorn Leaf And Flower Tea
Why bother with hawthorns? They are beautiful, interesting and delicious wild edibles with known health benefits. Some people use the berries to make hawthorn jelly, but I have yet to try this. This grows as a small tree or large shrub, bearing clusters of white flowers in late spring. The berries turn red in September (here), but sweet later. By October 31st they were sweet, and maybe a little past peak. Each berry has 3-5 seeds.
Foraging Hawthorn & Cordial Recipe
The leaves are lobed and toothed, as you can see in my photo above. Many other hawthorn species have similar leaves. The tree is heavily armed with long thorns, up to about 3 inches long. However, with reasonable care, you can easily harvest the berries, which tend to hang away from the branch. It is even easier later in the season after many of the leaves have fallen and the thorns are no longer hiding.
Also called common hawthorn, this is a European native that escaped cultivation and naturalized in North America. It is sometimes marked as an invasive plant, but I do not find it very often, and when I see it, there is not a lot of it in one area. Maybe it’s invasive in other parts of the country, but it doesn’t seem to be particularly aggressive here. Like Washington hawthorn, single seeded hawthorn grows as a shrub or small tree, bearing clusters of white blooms in late spring. The oval red berries ripen a little earlier (than Washington hawthorn) in autumn and contain one seed (hence the name). The toothed leaves are more deeply lobed than those of Washington hawthorn, but the thorns are much smaller, only about 1/2 inch to an inch in length.
Hawthorns are common in the forest understory here in Massachusetts, but they are scrawny specimens that don’t fruit well. It is too shady in the forest. To find fruit-laden hawthorns, look in sunny places, such as shrubbery and thickets, near meadows and along streams. They are often planted as ornamentals, so if your friend has one and you can’t seem to pick some berries, you have an easy food experience at your fingertips.
This is my first experience using hawthorn berries, and I use them to make an extract, using the same process you would use to make vanilla extract. I hope to use hawthorn extract as a flavoring in cooking and baking. I filled a clean tin jar about 3/4 full with berries, covered them with 80 proof vodka, and capped the jar. I’m not sure how long it will take to extract enough flavor from the berries, so I’ll check it daily. I know other extracts, (like vanilla extract) take weeks, so I expect that here.October/November, after the first frost, is also the time to pick hawthorn berries. Hawthorn is relatively unused as a hedge berry that is mainly used for hawthorn cider or hawthorn brandy. It can also be used to make a jam or jelly. Hawthorn gin is much nicer than sloe gin. It is not so sweet and syrupy, in fact it tastes more like a fortified wine like dry sherry, than it does a liqueur. It’s worth the trouble. Hawthorn gin made now will be perfect next Christmas. If you don’t think you can wait that long, make double the quantity – some to drink young this year, and some to mature for the next. Make a lot though, because it’s so much more!

Sort, top and tail the berries. This is quite time consuming and not the end of the world if you don’t – however it will result in sediment that is difficult to strain later and will affect the clarity of your gin. Pack the berries in a preserving jar, sprinkle a little sugar between layers. Once you’ve reached the top of the jar (leave a bit of room to shake), fill with cheap gin (supermarket own brand will do). Seal and put in a cupboard. Give the pot a shake every few days or so.
After 4 weeks the berries will have lost their color and the gin has turned a shade of rosé. (If you leave it longer before straining, the flavor will become more intense. However, you are more likely to develop a muddy sediment. If you have bright plump berries, you can leave the gin to macerate for several months , but if the trees are hard and discolored a month is enough.) Once strained, filter off into bottles and mature for a further three months at least. Enjoy in moderation!
Hawthorn also has a history as an herb used by herbalists to treat high blood pressure. It is also beneficial for the heart, as it has vasorelaxant properties and is very high in bioflavonoids – also good for your heart. This is well supported by research. (If your blood pressure is already high and you are on medication, you should not simply stop taking it. But, in conjunction with a consultation with a medical herbalist, you may be able to reduce your dependence on drugs.) The best way to take Hawthornberry is as a tincture. A tincture is basically the herb (in this case the hawthornberry) macerated (soaked) in alcohol to form a tincture. So basically hawthorn gin is a form of tincture. And a small sip taken regularly, as in old country days, can help keep the heart and circulation healthy. A tea made with the leaves or berries is also a healthy way to keep your blood pressure low, especially when combined with lime flowers and leaves. an important medicinal herb for thousands of years. In ancient Rome, it was used to reduce diarrhea. It is also a staple herb in traditional Chinese medicine. In the Middle Ages, Europeans used it to keep their hearts healthy.
There are hundreds of species of hawthorn around the world. Although they are small, hawthorn berries pack a serious health punch, especially for your heart. They can also improve your exercise performance (x).
Hawthorn Berry Extract
Cardiovascular disease is the most common reason for doctor visits, hospitalization and death in the United States. More than 600,000 people die each year from heart disease (x).
Hawthorn berries contain phytonutrients including anthocyanidins and proanthocyanidins – antioxidants that strengthen the walls of blood vessels. They can also reduce symptoms of congestive heart failure, irregular heartbeat, arrhythmia, low blood pressure, angina, atherosclerosis and high cholesterol (x).
Research suggests that hawthornberry extract significantly benefits heart health compared to a placebo (x). In one study, researchers gave 78 patients with heart failure 200 mg of hawthorn three times a day for two months. At the end of the trial, patients experienced an improvement in working heart capacity and a reduction in their heart disease symptoms (x). In fact, hawthorn berry was almost as effective as prescription heart medication in reducing symptoms – and it had fewer side effects (x).
Hawthorn can also keep your heart healthy by lowering blood pressure. In one study, scientists gave 79 patients with type 2 diabetes either 1,200 mg of hawthorn extract daily or a placebo. At the end of the 16-week study, participants who took hawthorn had a greater reduction in blood pressure than those who did not (x).
