Comes from the Greek word ‘kratos’, meaning hardness, and wood, ‘okkus’ meaning ‘thin’ and ‘acantha’ meaning thorn. In several European countries, especially in Germany, it was used as a hunting hedgehog, “haw” being an old word for “hedgehog”. This shrub is also known as the ‘white tree’ because of its bark.
Most of the commercially grown venison comes from the UK and countries such as Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, the former Yugoslavia and Poland. Collect flowering branches in the spring, as all parts (leaves, branches, spines, flowers) can be used for new rootstock. Or discard stems and spines if drying. Fruit is harvested in full autumn and before the first frost.
Hawthorn has been used since the Middle Ages, with some accounts dating back to the first century Greek herbalist Dioscorides. It was later used by the Swiss physician Paracelsus (1493-1541 BC). A particularly symbolic tree with many folktales and magical myths surrounding it, the hornbeam was a “sacred tree medicine” for the ancient Druids, especially when it grew alongside the oak and ash trees referred to in fairy tales. However, it was unlucky to bring the flowers home, and perhaps they would bring their fairy folk with them. Hawthorn branches and flowers were added to the wedding bouquet, which symbolized purity and prosperity at Greek weddings, and were used to adorn decorations in worship of Hymen, the god of marriage. In Ireland, couples who wished to marry the poet would dance around him at their weddings. Buds are attached to newborn babies to ward off evil, and are used to decorate maypoles for May Day or Beltane, which celebrate fertility and renewal. The flowering of this tree coincided with the first day of summer in May.
In traditional European medicine, all parts of the tree were valued and used: leaves, fruits, flowers, and wood. The flowers were used as a heart tonic and diuretic, and the fruits and leaves were made into a tea to soothe the throat. The bright red fruits are also made into a delicious brandy. Additionally, wood was carved into small objects such as boxes and combs and burned as fuel to produce super-hot wood.

Hawthorn or ‘shanzha’ has been used in TCM since ancient times, but most of its historical uses have recently been related to digestion. It is considered to be slightly warm, associated with the Spleen, Stomach and Liver meridians, and represents both sweet and sour tastes. Today, it is used to support the cardiovascular system, and in fact, the fruit is so popular in China that it becomes a poetic dessert that resembles the “fruit increase” in the West.
Hawthorn is considered a superior cardiac tonic by many herbalists. However, its effects on the heart are many. Many consider music to be special for the emotional or spiritual heart as well. Herbalist Matthias Becker claims that cruciferous vegetables are especially beneficial for women who are “broken-hearted,” that is, people who are “wounded and wounded.” Often flowers and leaves are used as flower arrangements to solve these types of emotional problems. Hawthorn is considered to be slightly warm and sweet in flavor.
Precautions Please note that Hawthorn Berries sometimes develop a white film on the fruit. Natural sucrose matures in this outer skin. We recommend that you consult a qualified physician before using herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medication.
