Due to its extreme hardiness and tolerance of harsh conditions, rowan is found higher on mountain slopes than any other tree except silver birch, and is therefore often called mountain ash. But it is also one of the most domesticated trees, often planted well away from its wild habitat. It frequents urban and suburban gardens, where it never outgrows its confines, its beautiful spring blooms and fall display of lipstick-red berries can be appreciated up close. However, this association of houses and rowan is not merely ornamental, and goes back to the belief that the rowan has protective properties. It has long been widely planted near doors as protection against witches and other evil spirits.
