Simple Ways To Harness The Healing Power Of Hawthorn
Making a tincture is a great way to have a home remedy at hand every time to serve a dose for different ailments.

Foraging Hawthorn & Cordial Recipe
First, measure four ounces of dried hawthorn berries. About half a (1/2 pound) bag, or 1 cup.
I would like to note that when I first opened my bag of hawthorn, I immediately noticed a little white stuff on most of the grapes. It looked like mold to me, so I called the Bulk Herb Store and expressed my concern. The receptionist stopped me and talked to Shoshanna, the fruit grower who runs the store.
Shoshanna assured me that the white stuff I was seeing was normal; oozes from the inside of the fruit, dries out the skin. There is nothing to worry about.
Pour freely into a glass container. A pint bottle is easy, because you want to cover the fruits of the hawthorn with a pint of brandy (or vodka).
Hawthorn Berry Health Benefits
Always use glass because it is disposable. Other containers can interact negatively with the contents of your hawthorn berry tincture, which can cause unwanted interactions. Glass is easier to clean than plastic or metal, too, and you don’t have to worry about leaching toxins into your tincture.
I recommend using an amber colored glass bottle in particular. Cobalt is another option. I like the tinted glass because it will help filter out UV light and protect the tincture from going bad.
Put a lid on the bottle, and store in a cool place for at least 2-4 weeks. Make sure you name the jar so you remember when you started it. Shake the jar well every day, to help extract the juice from the grapes.
Using a strainer, strain the hawthorn tincture into the tincture bottle. Store in a cool, dark place. You can store it in the refrigerator, but it is not necessary.

This is a powerful moisturizer, remember a little goes a long way. I honestly start with a smaller dose than two teaspoons – maybe start with one teaspoon to see how your body reacts.
If you don’t like the taste, you can cover it by hiding it in a sweet dessert or adding it to a tea, as you would with honey.
Tinctures from dried plants usually last 2-5 years. You don’t want to make a tincture with fresh herbs, or they may start to rot from too much water.

There are many benefits to using alcohol, however. A tincture can last up to five years, while vinegar only lasts three years and glycerin only two.
That’s still the case, though, and even though alcohol-free tinctures don’t last very long, there’s a good chance you’ll use them up before they expire.
The mother of apple cider vinegar contains proteins, friendly bacteria, and enzymes that will improve your immunity and provide many of the same benefits in terms of energy as alcohol, but without alcohol!
