Ideal for the smaller garden, this brighter form of the native hawthorn tree will do well in even the harshest of positions and soils, such as coastal, exposed, polluted and wet areas. Very popular with wildlife, Splendens will reach a height and spread of 5 x 4 meters in 20 years. As the name suggests, this tree has sharp thorns on its branches.

Why Hawthorn Is The Best Tree To Plant In Small Gardens

Our potted Frosted Thorn trees can be planted at any time of the year. Start about a meter from the hole where you want to remove weeds and grass. Dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and about 2 times as wide. To help establish the tree more effectively, sprinkle it in the hole where the root grows.

Remove the pot, gently loosen the roots and place them in the planting hole. Mix 50% of the original soil with compost, fill the hole and gently firm it. Avoid putting soil around the neck of the tree.

We recommend planting frost thistles. On a single cover, place it at an angle so it doesn’t go into the root mass and push it in until it’s firm. Use a buckle tie, placing the spacer between the hole and the tree. For more information, visit the tips section

If you are planting in spring or summer, water well for the first few months. Increase watering in hot or dry weather. If you plant in the fall, you may need to water a little. Watering kits make it easier.

Common (english) Hawthorn Identification And Control: Crataegus Monogyna

After planting, keep the area free of competing weeds and grasses during the first few growing seasons. If your area is prone to rabbits, use a rabbit repellant.

You can prune Frosted Thorn trees in the summer after flowering to help maintain a light stem. Pruning the lower branches will lift the crown, creating a more attractive shape. If some tidying up is needed, it can be done in autumn. Remove any damaged or crossed branches and make sure enough light reaches the cage inside.

Although known as the Great Golden Star, the star feature of this tree is its bright, edible, red (not at all golden), crab apple-sized, and pear-shaped fruits. Crataegus Pinnatifida var Major, native to China, is one of the best fruiting hawthorn trees, as the fruit keeps well through the cold months when left on the branches, adding good aesthetic interest to the winter garden.

This Chinese hawthorn is almost thornless, with large, dark green leaves that turn a deep reddish color in the fall. Crataegus Pinnatifida var major produces clusters of white flowers typical of the Hawthorn type in May. The tree is modest in maturity, reaching a height and spread of 4 x 3 meters in 20 years, suitable for small gardens. Prefers sun or partial shade and well-drained soil.
