Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs when fat builds up in the liver and affects 20 to 30 percent of the world’s population.

Without symptoms and left untreated, it can progress to an advanced form called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) – where inflammation occurs and can lead to liver damage.

Eating 15 to 30 grams of nuts and seeds a day can reduce the likelihood of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, according to a study by Dr Elena George, a leading researcher at Deakin University’s Institute of Physical Education and Nutrition.

Dr. George said women benefited from eating “any amount of nuts” while men only benefited from 15 to 30 grams of nuts and seeds.

Dr. George said the decline in benefits could be explained by higher consumption of nuts, which reflects higher consumption of whole foods.

Researchers analyzed nut intake and NAFLD prevalence among more than 25,000,000 people 18 and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The survey is a survey program designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. The survey combines interviews and physical examinations.

The analysis excluded chestnuts due to their low total fat content and coconuts due to their high saturated fat content.

Otherwise, research includes almonds, almond butter, Brazil nuts, cocoa, cocoa butter, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, walnuts, chickpeas, and peanut butter.

Seeds included in the study: pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, sesame oil, sunflower seeds, psyllium seeds, and chia seeds.

Dr. George says they’re nutritionally high in unsaturated fats, fiber, and antioxidants.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is one of those conditions that is not easily diagnosed. In cases of liver injury, there are no symptoms at first.

A liver function test will indicate the presence of fatty liver, but it is up to the GP to recognize the need for the test or to prescribe it as part of an annual check-up.

Once diagnosed, it is up to the patient to make lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) in the absence of drug therapy.

Adding nuts and seeds to your diet “may be a simple way to prevent chronic liver disease, as well as provide other benefits already established in science,” Dr. George said.

Nuts and seeds are rich dietary sources of unsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, minerals and antioxidant compounds, which have been linked to reduced inflammatory markers and increased antioxidant capacity, he said.

This was an observational study. In January, Dr. George and his colleagues will recruit participants for a clinical trial that will analyze the effects of the Mediterranean diet on liver health, including walnut consumption.
